Portrait of Nancy M Bostick

After finishing my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 2015, I began my masters of Plant Protection and Pest Management at the University of Georgia. During my time at UGA, I have primarily focused on a graduate research project that includes two different model systems- sugarcane aphids in grain sorghum and white mold in peanuts. Pest abundance found in each system was uploaded to a smart phone app by Georgia Cooperative Extension agents, and this information was sent to relevant stakeholders as real-time alerts. To assess the functionality and viability of the system, replicated small plot studies were established at three locations in Georgia over two summers. Treatments in the small plot studies related to timing of insecticide and fungicide applications to manage the target pests. Specific treatments included an untreated control, a grower standard (prescriptive applications as recommended by Cooperative Extension), and an experimental treatment regime that was driven by the real-time alerts. Additionally, I have experience in scouting cotton, corn and a variety of vegetable crops, as well as some experience with molecular lab techniques such as DAS- ELISA and RT-PCR. I plan to complete my second year of data collection and graduate in December 2017.
