Uyi’s Biography

Osariyekemwen Uyi was born and raised in Benin City, Nigeria, spending many childhood days in the forests and farms around the ancient city. After obtaining a PhD degree in Entomology, Uyi was employed as a Lecturer (on leave of absence) by the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria. He previously conducted Postdoctoral research in the US and South Africa, and has collaborated with scientists in many countries. Uyi has successfully supervised a few postgraduate (1 PhD and 1 M.Sc.) and 15 B.Sc. (Hons) students and published more than 25 research papers.

Research Overview

The central goal of Uyi’s career is to advance our understanding of the ecology of insect-plant interactions and develop strategies to control and manage pests of agricultural and ecological importance. An additional goal is to develop a framework for integrated pest management, and to transfer research output to people and relevant stakeholders through communication, teaching and community engagement. I am specifically interested in:

(1)   ecology and control of invasive species,

(2)   the ecology of insect-plant interactions,

(3)   thermal ecology,

(4)   ethnobiology and

(5)   the impact of pesticides on beneficial organisms.

Uyi is currently working on the ecology and management of sugarcane aphid.
