Student Spotlight: Emily Shelby
Emily attends 2024 CASE Workshop
Emily Shelby, a Ph.D. candidate in Patricia Moore’s Lab, was awarded a sponsorship by the UGA Graduate School to attend the 2024 Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) workshop hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Emily, along with three other UGA graduate students and students from Georgia Tech and Emory, went to Washington, DC to learn about the structure and organization of Congress, including the federal budget and appropriation process. Through interactive seminars, the students learn about policy-making and communication, gaining tools for effective science communication and civic engagement. On the last day of the program, the graduate students met with Georgia-elected members of Congress, including Congresswoman Nikema Williams who represents Georgia’s 5th District.
While in Washington, D.C., Emily had a behind the scenes tour of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History with Dr. Floyd Shockley, the collections manager for the Department of Entomology at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History who is also an alumnus of the UGA Department of Entomology.
