At UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, 2021 Borlaug Undergraduate Scholar Samantha Wegener discovered precision plant breeding — the combination of gene editing and engineering — which showed her a path to solving complicated issues to improve plant varieties. CAES News

Samantha Wegener enrolled at the University of Georgia’s Tifton campus after earning her associate’s degree in biology from the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, South Carolina. It was during her last semester in Beaufort that Wegener was introduced to the world of plant breeding.

Georgia 4-H was proud to offer the 2021 State Horse Educational Competition to 111 youth in a virtual format this year. This competition was previously linked with the Georgia 4-H State Horse Show hosted at the the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia.

The 2021 Georgia 4-H State Horse Show, hosted by Georgia 4-H, was held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry, Georgia. Overall, 157 youth participated in the competition.

Citizen scientists around the state can help keep track of pollinator health in Georgia by participating in the second Great Georgia Pollinator Census Aug. 21 and 22. CAES News

Later this summer, Georgia residents will have the opportunity to help researchers find out what’s the buzz with insect pollinators in their state.
The black fly colony is based around aquatic rearing units converted from salt water aquariums. The units incorporate a “runway” that serves as an artificial stream and provides the surface where the black fly larvae attach, develop and pupate. CAES News

John Ruter realized at a young age that he belonged in a garden. He came to UGA in 1990 to serve as the nursery crop research specialist at the Tifton Campus after earning bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in horticulture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the University of Tennessee and the University of Florida, respectively. He now serves as the Allan M. Armitage Professor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, specializing in ornamental plant breeding and production.
